Del Toro to make Pinocchio

Guillermo del Toro is teaming up with The Jim Henson Company to create a 3D stop-motion Pinocchio film. The director will produce the new version of the Carlo Collodi fairytale. Directing duties will be done by Fantastic Mr Fox animation director Mark Gustafson and artist Gris Grimly.

Del Toro told Empire Online-“I believe that our tale of Pinocchio recaptures the darker, more daunting aspects of the book that have been missing from previous film incarnations and takes advantage of all the allegorical aspects of the tale,” del Toro says in a statement. “Gris and Mark have a clear vision of this world. Matthew, the directors and I have constructed an adaptation that I feel enormously proud of.” The “darker” elements include the fact that the Blue Fairy in this version is a dead girl’s spirit and the heroic puppet having strange, lucid dreams.”

Grimly published an illustrated Pinocchio book in 2002, which will act as a general guide for the film. Nick Cave has also signed on as music consultant.

They had me until “…recaptures the darker, more daunting…”

Because everything needs to be “dark and edgy” nowadays or else the juvenile crowd just won’t care.

LOL I agree. But I think they want to get the message across that it’s not like the past Pinocchio movies we have seen. If it is anything like the original story it will be more adult. 🙂
