Compost with Oscar the Grouch

The next time you’re at work in the kitchen, peeling and chopping vegetables and fruits or cracking eggs, don’t toss the scraps and waste in the garbage. Instead, place the organic matter in a handy pail or tabletop trashcan so that you can give your plants nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium in the form of compost. As garbage expert and longtime resident of Sesame Street Oscar the Grouch says, these sorts of kitchen scraps will break down into the perfect natural fertilizer. As your pail or garbage can fills up, bring it to a larger compost heap near your garden, and mix it in well. Water frequently, and when it’s ready, mix the compost in with some soil, then add it to your garden beds or potting mix.

Oscar the Grouch will be appearing on the Martha Stewart Show: Monday July 11th, 2006.
